The Town of Somerset held the Special Town Meeting on June 14, 2010. Approximately 1,500 voters attended, but due to the large number in attendance, a motion was made, seconded, and approved that the meeting be moved to Monday June 21 at 7:00pm, at Venus de Milo Restaurant.
Some people asked about the legality of holding a Somerset town meeting in Swansea. We contacted the Massachusetts Secretary of State Office, and found that Mass General Laws Chapter 39 Section 9 states, in part, that "Town meetings shall be held within the geographic limits of the town unless a...by-law provides otherwise..." Somerset has enacted such a by-law, therefore it is permissible to hold the Town meeting in Swansea.
